Spotting & Resisting Misinformation: Teaching Secondary Students to Practice Critical Media Literacy 2021

In this course, participants will learn about why we need to practice media literacy when consuming, sharing, and creating print and digital media. We will cover the core concepts of media literacy and practice integrating them into existing lessons and pedagogical practices for in-person and remote instruction.

Course Objectives

  • Participants will learn about the core concepts of media literacy 
  • Participants will develop an understanding of why media literacy is important for middle and high school-age students 
  • Participants will form connections between their current practices and the core concepts of media literacy
  • Participants will become familiar with practical examples of infusing media literacy into their teaching and student learning 
  • Participants will work with others to develop a collection of media literacy resources to use when designing in-person and virtual lessons 
  • Participants will find personally-meaningful and relevant ways to weave media literacy practices into their teaching

Course Schedule

Participants will meet in 3 online synchronous sessions and complete 2.5 hours of asynchronous work.

  • Session 1: Wednesday, April 21 4:00 - 5:30 pm 
    • 1 hour of asynchronous work in between class sessions 
  • Session 2: Wednesday, April 28 4:00 - 5:30 pm 
    • 1 hour of asynchronous work in between class sessions 
  • Session 3: Wednesday, May 5 4:00 - 5:30 pm 
    • 30 minutes of asynchronous work

Course Details

  • The fee for this course is $90.
  • The course fee includes 7 clock hours (4.5 hours meeting in synchronous sessions, 2.5 hours of asynchronous work).

Meet the Instructor

Jenny Gawronski is a teacher educator and doctoral student in the Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum at the University of Washington. She is also an instructor in the graduate level Elementary and Secondary Teacher Education Programs. She teaches future teachers about integrating technology into their pedagogical strategies, focusing on students’ digital practices. She also teaches an undergraduate Digital Media Literacy course at the University of Washington in the Education, Community, and Organizations department. Jenny is also an active board member of the Seattle-based media literacy organization called Action for Media Literacy. Their most recent project is the Corona Multimedia Showcase, in which young people created media to illustrate their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
